It’s a bit scary…
You may find this surprising, but this week I'm doing something that makes me really scared.
Yes, I train people on how to build their confidence, and it's my job to ensure you're feeling as confident and brave as you can possibly be in life, and I took also get scared too.
Just because this is my life's work, it doesn't mean I don't also feel what you feel. I am constantly pushing the boundaries, expanding my comfort zone, and doing things I once would have been terrified to do. This week, that includes solo travelling to a place I've never been and driving across the state to host a workshop.
Navigating airports, car hire, directions, hotels, and cross city driving is something outside of my comfort zone. I usually always have a buddy to go on the adventure with me.
The fact I now have clients based in Tasmania who I have the privilege of flying to and working with is unbelievable to me. It it something I am so excited for, and incredibly proud to be doing... and it still pushes the comfort zone.
The thing is, I recognise the benefit of expanding my comfort zone, of pushing the boundaries, and of embracing new experiences. I've been able to become more comfortable with the things that make me uncomfortable. Now I can see the benefits of that uncomfortable feeling. I can calm the wild voices running through my mind (yes, they still exist in my mind too), and I can get excited to feel this way instead of terrified.
It's a feeling I'd love you to experience too.
Becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable.
Which is why, for Hump Day Hype Up today I'm giving you this task:
Do something that makes you really uncomfortable.
It can be something big, or something little, but do something that you know makes you nervous and gives you a little feeling in your belly at the prospect of completing it.
Examples include:
Signing up for an exercise challenge you've never completed before
Start a conversation with a stranger - you could approach someone at a bar, chat to the person next to you on the train, or even talk to someone at the supermarket
Go to an event alone - maybe this is a networking event, or even getting dinner in a restaurant alone
Say yes to a public speaking opportunity that you'd usually handball to someone else
These are all examples of how you can challenge yourself today or this week. Doing this regularly, pushing the comfort zone often, helps your body to learn that things usually go well when you're outside of the bubble. It teaches you that it's most likely you'll have a good experience, and if not, you'll learn a lot in doing it - which will also make it a worthy experience.
